Based in Quito, Ecuador, Camari was initiated in 1981 as a complement to the work of FEPP, an Ecuadoran Christian development agency that provides credit, training and technical assitance to farmers throughout Ecuador. Camari works to market agricultural and handicraft products on behalf of small producers including collectives, producer organisations and individuals living in rural areas and marginalised urban areas in 18 of the 22 provinces of Ecuador. Camari's work benefits approximately 8,200 families of small producers in rural areas allowing them to remain in their home communities instead of leaving to find scarce work in the cities while providing another alternative for disadvantaged communities in poor urban areas. This work is particularly important in rural areas to ensure people receive stable, fair income that enables them to carry on family traditions of working the land, as well as preserving indigenous culture through the creation of traditional crafts. Camari is a member of IFAT, the World Fair Trade Organization. Camari's products are varied and included articles made from wool, wood, leather, ceramics and fibres; many of these objects are derived from Ecuadoran traditional designs.
