The Indonesian archipelago is formed around 18,000 islands with 6,000 of these uninhabited. With a population of around 234 million it's the fourth most most populous country in the world and contains a large diversity of ethnic groups, with over 580 languages and dialects spoken. While not a Muslim state, it is the largest Muslim-majority country in the world. The Indonesian economy suffered heavily in the late 90s following the crisis that struck many of the countries of South-East Asia. From the 70s to 1996 the percentage of population living below the poverty line fell from 60 to 11%, underlining the strong government commitment to poverty reduction. Indonesia was heavily affected by the Tsunami in December 2006, particularly devastating the region of Aceh in Sumatra, where an estimated 163,000 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands remained homeless. The reconstruction, despite much international aid, still require many years. In 2007, GDP per capita (PPP) was estimated to be at $3,725 with approximately 49% of the population living on $2 or less a day. The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at least the seventh century, and culturally it has been influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and European sources which is reflected in its furniture and handicrafts.
